Jesus described ready people, and they are neither hiding nor calculating. They are awake and at work:

Put those together and the ready life looks like an ordinary Tuesday: lights on, hands busy, head up. Love your people. Do your work. Tell the truth. Forgive fast, because you would rather be caught mid-kindness than mid-grudge. Watching is not a separate activity you bolt onto life; it is the tilt of a life that expects its Lord.
The difference between a watchman and a doomsday prepper is direction of gaze. One looks down at his supplies; the other looks up at the sky. “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13). Readiness that Scripture recognizes always has joy in it somewhere, because the event being awaited is not an incoming missile. It is a returning Lord.
